Lochia - Normal bleeding & discharge

 

After childbirth, the uterus will be discharged as a liquid, like blood, called lochia. Lochia formation was due to the residual blood within the uterus, white blood cells, mucus and organizations mixture of secretions, vaginal discharge due to shedding. The duration of lochia varies, about it usually last around three weeks. Fastest will be 14 days  and the longest could last for 6 weeks with lochia color and quantity will change over time.

1 to 3 days postpartum lochia color is dark red or red,  for the first time when the mother try to get up or after a long period of bed rest, the vagina area may have a sudden increase emission of blood, this is a normal phenomenon, mother does not need to worry too much.

To the first 4 to 10 days, lochia is slowly turned pink or brown,  lochia amount will be less, from 11 days onward the color will start to become more white, this period will lasted about 4 to 6 weeks. If a sudden increase in the amount lochia, or turn into a bright red tint, or smell, or lower abdominal pain, fever, chills phenomenon, then it is not normal, should immediately notify the medical staff.

 

 

Oversupply: too much milk

 

3 - 6 days after delivery mother will start to feel an "Oversupply" phenomenon. In general, in the postpartum occurred simultaneously on both sides of the breast, it will feel swelling, fever and pain, body temperature usually 38.4 Celsius degrees below normal and the body feels. The sooner the mother started breast-feeding, and with the baby's mouth open wide enough to take engulf the whole nipple, in this case "oversupply" will decrease. Case of "oversupply", breasts may feel really lumpy and hard due to milk secretion is not smooth, please use a warm towels to warm up the breasts, or using a circular motions massage the breast and nipple area.

 

 

Vaginal Conditions After Delivery

 

Mommy who have easy labors will have varying degrees of tear around their vaginal area, wound will heal at around 4-5 days and the pain will subside after a week. Remember: wound care can not be ignored, or is likely to cause inflammation. To keep the wound clean, first diluted with water or disinfectant cleaning the wound, wipe the area gently from front to back in the wound, each time after cleaning must throw aways the used cotton, repeat few times, and finally use a clean soft towel for drying hands and wound. Every time after using the toilet remember to clean thoughly the wound area to maintain a good hygiene

 

 

Postpartum Wound Care

 

For cesarean section Mommy, there will be a wide incision in the stomach, medicine will apply to the wound at the first or second day after surgery dressing,  suture removal will perform at the fifth day with the conduct of a dressing change.  The doctor will then paste breathable wound plastic bandage around the incision and she is ready to discharge from the hospital. Doctor recommended its best to use corset protecting the wound from activities that may caused pain involved. Two weeks after the operation, its good to replace a new breathable plastic bandage. Since then, is recommended best to replace bandage once a week. Every time when changing of the bandage, check carefully to see if  there is painful swelling of the wound or even discharge phenomenon. If this situation appear should immediately notify the medical staff or family doctor.

 

 

Tips:

Mommy in their confinement period after childbirth, should absorb adequate nutrition, drink plenty of water, adequate rest, maintaining physical and environmental hygiene, to stay cheerful . Doing all this will really help to be a healthy mom.
