Breastfeeding rates have continued to rise

Breast milk is considered the most modern medical profession a natural food for newborn babies. Breastfeeding the baby and mother have many benefits, for example, breastfeeding helps lower the chances for newborn to suffer from diarrhea, asthma and acute otitis media, are also less likely to grow up allergies and childhood obesity and other issues. Breastfeeding not only can enhance parent-child relationship between mother and child can also speed up the mother's postpartum recovery and to reduce the female breast cancer, ovarian cancer and osteoporosis risk.

 

According to the Health Department in all maternal and child health centre through its regular survey of breast-feeding, from the year of 1997 to the year of 2008, breastfeeding rate have increase dramatically, this reflects the Department of Health, Hospital Authority and other stakeholders work in promoting breast-feeding and  have achieved certain results. However, the Department of Health pointed out that the percentage of babies breast-feeding in Hong Kong have continued to rise continuously, but for other countries reported a higher rate compared to Hong Kong still can be improved. Therefore, the Department of Health called on all sectors of society, including families, healthcare professionals and employers work together to continue to promote breastfeeding, so that all mothers have access to sufficient information, encouragement and support, try to breastfeed and maintain long nursing time to help their growth and development, to lay the foundation for future health.
